Course Description
In this English 9 online course, students will focus on vocabulary development, comparing connotation with denotation and identifying word meanings using sentence structure. Reading instruction will stress inference; analysis of interesting and important information; character development and complex figurative language in narrative literature and poetry. Writing exercises will emphasize the comparison of multiple ideas and perspectives. Students will further develop skills in analytical evaluation and assessment of writing, including a study of the editing process and the evaluation of source materials.
This course is intended for new high school students and builds on essential reading and writing skills for academic success. Students will engage with diverse literary forms – including short stories, nonfiction, poetry, drama and novel excerpts – exploring a range of narratives and styles.
